The way I mentally model marketing art online is through a process called “The Circles of Art Marketing.”

I’m currently working on a detailed articles series for paid Sovereign Artist Club members that will walk you through each circle and what you have to do at each step to move prospective art buyers to the next step.

If you’re not currently a paid Sovereign Artist member, you might consider joining before we start that article series.

For today, however, I’m sharing an overview of this concept as I simplified it for a Twitter thread. Reading through the tweets below will give you a good foundation of how this model works:

In the beginning, it's just you and your art.

For your art to be saleable, you have to create the right mix of elements to turn it into a product. They are: quality, category, story and price.

Each of the four product elements contributes to the appeal of your art. You can compensate for being weak in one by being extra strong in another one.

Your buyers and superfans will want to feel close to you personally. So communicate with them via one-to-one channels. Nurture them. Develop personal relationships. This only works well if you've nailed the four elements discussed in the previous tweet.

Your buyers come from your larger audience. You must build this audience. The best way to communicate with your audience is one-to-many channels that YOU CONTROL. Email newsletters. Your website. You want to own these channels to protect yourself from platform risk.

The best use for open platforms like Twitter, Instagram, etc is to build general awareness and interest in you in your art. Your goal on public channels is to get people to join your audience. The goal in your audience channels is to get people to become superfans or buyers.

Here's what the full BoldBrush Art Marketing Circles model looks like. The buyers journey is: Awareness -> Audience -> Buyer If your marketing isn't working well they key is to improve your efforts at the inner circles first. When in doubt, move one circle in.

Your goal at each step is to build a long term marketing asset. The main assets you want to build are: Awareness -> Fans and Followers Audience -> Mailing List Buyers -> Collector List (& sales!) These assets are critical for increasing your sales over time.

Common marketing channels are great, but being an artist is hard. That's why, when you work with @boldbrush and @fasosites, we have our own channels at each ring of the model that amplify your marketing efforts and extend your reach.

Thank you so much for reading today! We are on a mission to enable a million artist to live off their art. To achieve that, we need to expand our reach to more artists than we reach today? Will you consider helping me with that? Even if you don’t choose to join Sovereign Artist, you can still help by helping me reach more artists on Twitter.

Please click the button below and then retweet the Tweet that comes up to your followers. I’d be quite grateful if you’d consider doing so. And don’t forget to follow me at https://twitter.com/clintavo.
