Truth hidden amongst the dross and leaves blowing by is still the shining truth. Devotion will take you the long distance. Discipline in one small moment is interrupted by those beautiful leaves.

The word "inspiration" was only mentioned once in this letter, and only in the final sentence. As fickle and somewhat unpredictable as inspiration is, it is "the third leg", at least as important as devotion and discipline. Besides, discipline and devotion are both just variations of staying on focus. Being an artist is a balancing act, y'know. That's my two cents anyway.

Yes, the Muse likes to see that one is devoted. I didn’t cover that in this piece, but have elsewhere (especially in my book). I don’t completely agree that devotion and discipline are just variations of focus. Discipline is forcing yourself to focus on something when your heart isn’t in it. Devotion is performing the thing(s) your soul resonates with and forcing yourself is rarely required.

I must use discipline to exercise and brush my teeth every day. But my soul will suffer if I am not creative and ignore my writing. I very rarely have to “force” myself to write because it’s what I always want to do anyway.

Thank you for your comment.

My own belief is that when you have love for your craft, whatever form it takes, devotion will naturally follow and discipline will not be necessary because discipline implies forcing oneself.
