However…why am I automatically following 27 accounts??? And CANNOT unfollow them! I thought this new platform was about giving back freedom of choice??? Some of the accounts I have no interest in following and it seems no power to make that choice for myself…am I missing something here?

You can unfollow any of those 27 accounts at any time. The statement "CANNOT unfollow them" is not correct, you can. We also sometimes have one or two featured posts at the top of the timeline, which may be from people you do not follow, which I must point out is far less "advertising" (and it's not ads just highlighting art) than you will have on Instagram. That is how you are free to make your own decision, unfollow anyone you want, follow anyone else you want.
